Dennis Pungowiyi

Dennis Pungowiyi is a Siberian Yupik of the Qiwaghmilt Clan. He was born and raised in the sixties in Nome, Alaska. Dennis learned to carve at the age of 12 while visiting family and friends in Savoonga, Alaska. Dennis was mentored by numerous master carvers throughout his life. Dennis attended Nome Beltz High School and studied native arts and crafts with the late Harry Koozaata from St. Lawrence Island.

Dennis has developed his own unique style of carving which allows us to easily distinguish his carvings from others. Dennis is most well known for his highly detailed walrus carvings, however, he carves many different arctic animals as well as making and designing jewelry. Dennis is a full time carver and through his work would love to introduce you to his culture and artwork. Duane’s Antique Market carries many original carvings by Dennis Pungowiyi, come on down and take a look.
