Susie Silook

Susie Silook is a Yupik/Inupiaq writer, carver and sculptor.  She was born in Gambell, Alaska and is currently residing in Adak, Alaska.  Susie works in the traditional media of ivory and whalebone.  Although traditionally carved by men, Susie uses the ancestral ivory dolls of St. Lawrence as the basis of her work.  Susie is unique in her carvings as she depicts women rather then the animals most commonly carved by men.  Her themes are of contemporary issues confronting Native Alaskans, especially women, with a focus on violence against Native women.Her sculptures can be found in the Anchorage Museum, Alaska Native Heritage Center, de young Museum, Liteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art and Duane’s Antique Market.
